Ice Cream playdough

We made the coolest ice cream play dough the other week and my girls had a blast playing with it! I don’t usually make my own play dough, because I don’t like the smell and texture of traditional dough with salt. The best thing about this dough is that is has a smooth creamy texture like ice cream, and it smells AMAZING!!! You’ll see why when I share the only 2 ingredients you need to make this awesome stuff. Oh, and if your toddler gets a little too curious and shoves a handful in his mouth, it’s totally okay because it’s EDIBLE!

We found this simple recipe from Smart School House, using ingredients you probably have in your pantry right now! All you need to make this play dough is:

  • 1 cup of store-bought frosting
  • 2 3/4 cups of powdered sugar

That’s really it! Then a few drops of food coloring is optional, but I think it’s much more fun to have colored ice cream! If you use colored frosting, you could totally skip the food coloring.

This dough is super easy to make and your kids can help too. I tried two different ways to mix it, and I found that I preferred the hand mixing better than with my KitchenAid.

Step 1: Measure your powdered sugar and dump it in a medium size mixing bowl.

Step 2: Measure one cup of frosting (I used Pillsbury Vanilla) and add it in the bowl.

Step 3: Start mixing with a rubber spatula or mixing spoon, until all the sugar is incorporated and you have a nice smooth texture. Towards the end, I used my hands to mix and it worked great.

Step 4: Add food coloring and mix until color is even. (This worked best with my hands too!)

If your dough is sticky at all when handling it, you need more powdered sugar. I got lucky with my first batch and it came out perfectly! When I tried with my KitchenAid, the consistency was a little different so that’s why I would recommend just mixing by hand (even though it’s a little messier!)

When the dough was all mixed, we got out some fun ice cream bowls, spoons, sprinkles and cones and started to play! I LOVE how the dough scoops like real ice cream. It is so satisfying!

The girls played ice cream shop, and made each other some delicious concoctions!

They kept saying how yummy it smells…. and I agree! I kind of wanted to eat it too! So if you’re looking for a fun summer activity, you seriously need to try this out. All your kids will love it. The texture is so fun to play with, it’s just as satisfying as slime, even my boys wanted to play!
